The LIFE LYNXCONNECT Project would like to express its gratitude to Úbeda (Jaén), to all its neighbours, to its Local Police and to the Municipal Fire Brigade, for their support to the staff of the Iberian Lynx Recovery Team of the Consejería de Sostenibilidad, Medio Ambiente y Economía Azul de la Junta de Andalucía, in the capture device established for the rescue of “Sotillo” today, August 18th, Environment and Blue Economy of the Junta de Andalucía, in the capture device established for the rescue of “Sotillo” today 18th August, who yesterday made his appearance in the cemetery and today, had climbed a tree, eminently frightened, in the plot of a house in Úbeda.
“Sotillo”, a male lynx, released on 19 September 2022 in the municipality of Iznalloz (Granada), his release meant another step towards the success of LIFE LYNXCONNECT and the Iberian lynx recovery programme in Andalusia, which not only involved the release but also the creation of a new reintroduction area for this species and the future interconnection of the different lynx population centres in Andalusia, Extremadura and Portugal.
Today “Sotillo” connects this incipient population of Sierra Arana with that of Sierra Morena Oriental. The significance of this “journey” in search of new territories is the achievement of LYNXCONNECT’s main objective: connectivity between Iberian Lynx populations to ensure a self-sustainable and viable functional meta-population.
