LYNXCONNECT meetings with the hunting sector in Extremadura come to an end”.
May 25, 2023
The LIFE LYNXCONNECT project has just finished its route through Extremadura dedicated to meeting with the hunting sector and holding meetings to discuss the situation of coexistence with the Iberian lynx. With specific meetings for game managers, landowners and hunters, LYNXCONNECT has managed to bring the reintroduction and stabilisation of the most emblematic species of the Iberian Peninsula closer to the Extremadura region, a region that had a particular situation with regard to the wild rabbit, the lynx’s main food source.
Through direct contact and the exchange of opinions, a set of reports has been drawn up that will serve to detect difficulties and find specific solutions. Thus, during these talks, the attendees were listened to in order to put on the table the experience of each social reserve that was susceptible to receive individuals according to the reintroduction and passage areas.
The Artemisan Foundation, as a partner of the LIFE LYNXCONNECT project, has been in charge of acting as an intermediary between both agents and has visited each municipality at times adapted to the work of the people in the target sectors.
The next step is now to give shape to this example in the Andalusian community, where a series of localities close to receiving specimens of Iberian lynx will be defined, following the reintroduction in Sierra Arana (Granada) and thanks to the work of connecting existing populations. All this is possible thanks to the involvement of the hunting federations of each region and the joint work with the relevant administration.
