Associated beneficiary

By Law 45/2008, of 27 August, the municipalities constituted an inter-municipal community for the local authorities to effectively manage the EU funds from the Regional Operational Programme / INALENTEJO.

The Intermunicipal Community of Baixo Alentejo (which adopted the acronym CIMBAL) was approved at the end of 2008, its statutes were published on 20 August 2009, and its deliberative and executive bodies were created in 2010. It became fully operational on 1 April 2011.

The Community includes the municipalities of Aljustrel, Almodôvar, Alvito, Barrancos, Beja, Castro Verde, Cuba, Ferreira do Alentejo, Mértola, Moura, Ourique, Serpa and Vidigueira. CIMBAL corresponds to the Baixo Alentejo Level III Territorial Statistical Unit (NUT III) and has its headquarters in Beja.

SWithout prejudice to the powers transferred by the Central Administration and the municipalities, CIMBAL aims to pursue the following public purposes:

  • Promotion of the planning and management of the economic, social and environmental development strategy of the territory covered;
  • Articulation of municipal investments of inter-municipal interest;
  • articipation in the management of regional development support programmes, i.e. within the scope of the National Strategic Reference Framework – QREN;
  • Planning the actions of public entities of a supra-municipal nature.
