Between 14 and 17 November, the IUCN Red List Assessment and Green Status Assessment of the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) 14-17 November 2023 was held in Seville, within the framework of the LIFE 19/NAT/ES/001055 project in collaboration with the IUCN itself. Among others, Dr Urs Breintenmoser, Co-Chair of the IUCN Cat Specialist Group, Alejandro Rodríguez, researcher at the Doñana Biological Station and the coordinator of the LIFE LYNXCONNECT project and head of the Iberian Lynx Recovery Programme in Andalusia, Javier Salcedo, attended the event. They were accompanied by different specialists from the Cat SG Office, experts from the Green Status Assessments and technicians from the LYNXCONNECT Project.
The IUCN is currently working on the elaboration of a “green status” of conservation of the species that complements the well-known “category of threat” of the red list. This status gives an idea of the population reduction caused by human-induced threats, as well as the potential for recovery that each species currently has. The seminar discussed how to assess the green status of the Iberian lynx. The team explored human threats in a historical perspective and reached a consensus on how to carry out the assessment. It is hoped that this will be carried out over the next year.
The Workshop ended with a visit to the Doñana National Park, where the participants were able to observe some of the actions to improve rabbit populations that OAPN, a partner of LIFE LYNXCONNECT, is carrying out in the area. The trip ended with a visit to the Iberian Lynx Observatory in Acebuche, where its occupants were peacefully “napping” and whose vision was a real farewell gift.
