The Dirección General de Medio Natural of the Consejería de Agua, Agricultura, Ganadería y Medio Ambiente of the Comunidad Autónoma Región de Murcia is responsible for the planning and management of protected natural areas of the Natura 2000 Network, natural habitats and wild fauna and flora. It is also responsible for natural environment conservation and fighting climate change, representation in the Network of Environmental Authorities, forestry policy, hunting and river fishing and wild fauna protection.

This Dirección General has extensive experience in activities related to the improvement, conservation and protection of fauna, especially those species included in the Catalogue of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna of the Region of Murcia. Some examples of these are:

  • Numerous fauna-of-interest recovery works inside and outside the Natura 2000 Network areas: Greek Tortoise (Testudo greca), White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala), Fartet (Aphanius iberus), Bonelli’s Eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus), Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni), Otter (Lutra lutra), etc.
  • Increase of Natura 2000 Network areas due to endangered fauna species presence.
  • Biological monitoring of endangered fauna.
  • Drafting and approval of recovery plans for endangered species.
  • Rabbit censuses in the proposed lynx reintroduction areas and their surroundings.
  • Rabbit releases.
  • Population assessments of game species.
